Report: Google is developing 'Terminator' glasses

By John D. Sutter, CNN

(CNN) - Looks like we're all about to get way more familiar with the concept of "augmented reality."

According to a report on The New York Times' Bits blog, Google is developing a set of glasses that will display digital information on top of the real world. Or, for the pop-culture inclined, they're making "Terminator" glasses.

Here are some details from the report, which CNN has not confirmed:

According to several Google employees familiar with the project who asked not to be named, the glasses will go on sale to the public by the end of the year. These people said they are expected “to cost around the price of current smartphones,” or $250 to $600.

The people familiar with the Google glasses said they would be Android-based, and will include a small screen that will sit a few inches from someone’s eye. They will also have a 3G or 4G data connection and a number of sensors including motion and GPS.

A Google spokesman declined to comment on the project.

The blog 9 to 5 Google has what it says are more details about the functionality of the glasses:

One really cool bit: The navigation system currently used is a head tilting-to scroll and click. We are told it is very quick to learn and once the user is adept at navigation, it becomes second nature and almost indistinguishable to outside users.

This is a concept that's been popping up in the world of tech-futurism for years now. There are a number of augmented reality apps - Layar, Wikitude and plenty of others - that use a smarphone's camera to overlay an image of the world with digital bits of info. Wikitude, for example, puts information about cultural and historical landmarks on top of camera images to help travelers get a better understanding of their surroundings.

Perhaps a more seamless way to do this would be with glasses - since you could get this kind of data all the time, without opening an app and putting your phone in front of your face. Google isn't the first to toy with this concept, but when a big technology player like Google throws its weight behind a new idea, it tends to go from sci-fi to mainstream much more quickly than it would otherwise. For now, the Times says Google doesn't expect people to wear the glasses all the time:

The glasses will have a low-resolution built-in camera that will be able to monitor the world in real time and overlay information about locations, surrounding buildings and friends who might be nearby, according to the Google employees. The glasses are not designed to be worn constantly — although Google expects some of the nerdiest users will wear them a lot — but will be more like smartphones, used when needed.

Look for these types of augmented reality projects to continue pushing forward.

Some researchers are already experimenting with contact lenses that could display digital information. The info would appear to float in the air - above reality.

What a fantastic post! I am often tnriigued by other people see me compared to how I see myself. What do I like about myself? Well, physically I like my eyes and I am tired of not being able to see them because they are always behind glasses so I am on the phone right now inquiring about laser eye surgery. This is something I have wanted to do for years. Was this answer helpful?

Well first off let me say that i am a doctor of sorts. The awsenr to your question is quite simple really. Most doctors in the field of optical surgery have a genetic anomaly in their 11th X chromosome. This defect does not allow a successful optical surgery to take place. Most of these doctors choose their field of work due to their own diagnosis of this gentic disease and they long to correct the problem with the current lasik surgery. Which reminds me of an experience i had while i was an intern at NASA. While designing a prototype partical accellerator a rogue gravitron escaped from the accelerators magnetic pole and damaged the retina of my dear co-worker Dave Lavery. Because of his damaged 11th chromosome he could not have the surgery procedure and was left with no eyesight in his left eye.If you have any questions email me atgood luck on your adventures and god speed.

I don't get why they'd use head-tilting as gestures. That would look silly to an onlooker. It would make more sense to track eye movements that is not so obvious. Squinting movements would zoom out, Wide eye movements to zoom in, looking to the left would scroll left, looking to the right would scroll right, looking up would scroll up, looking down would scroll down, blinking would click, holding your eyes shut for an amount of seconds would take a picture, ect... There is definitely promise to this technology however I think Google is limiting it's possibilities with head-tilting gestures.

In 1998 I was part of a focus group that taked about what computers would be like in 2015. One favorite idea was that we would wear a comptuer on our hip, like a sony walkman :-) , and it would plug into glasses to give you a HUD and be voice activated. Looks like we were not too far off.

Google has the Google Goggles app for Android - which will scan the live feed of your cell phone camera looking for things it can identify and notify you.

Do you not see that this technology will extend Google Maps Street Scenes right into your offices, bedrooms and bathrooms? Do you not realize that this technology coupled with Google's new privacy policy which says in essence "We will take every piece of data you generate and sell it to anybody that will pay for it without your knowledge or consent" means that Big Brother is here, and HE IS YOU!!! Google is a big corp, so obviously that's one that will benefit. It's not like they are taking people unaware. If you don't think the benefit you'll gain from these glasses is worth purchasing them, then don't. But for those people who want to broadcast everything they see to their Google+ friends, then they can do that.

The Vita came to the game late, and is only doing what another device already did a year or more ago.

This is the same thing I thought upon hearing about this. The idea behind the glasses may be cool, and all, but it will cause serious problems, especially with drivers who will use it regardless of the risk. Humans are very poor at judging risk, and we tend to think, "Nothing bad can happen to ME."

Do some reading up on the possbile complications associated with the surgery, and you can pretty much figure it out. Although it's not a high percentage, some folks experience halos and double vision afterwards. It also increases the likelyhood you will need bifocals later on. Opthamologists make their living using their eyes, and they aren't likely to take any chances with messing them up. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's not a good option for other folks, but it could end their careers- so they stick with glasses. It's not much different than a singer with a deviated septum electing not to have the nose job because it will change how their voice sounds. For you or I, that's not a big deal. But when you make your living as an opera star- well, that's a different story. You aren't going to do anything you don't absolutely have to do, because it could mean an end to your career. Opthamologists take pretty much the same view of lasik surgery. Was this answer helpful?

Hi,LASIK or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is a 30-minute healthcare prceudore used to treat vision problems due to nearsightedness. LASIK is a very popular vision correction prceudore and involves making a surgical incision in the cornea. The patient is given numbing drops, after which a suction ring is placed over the eye. The surgeon cuts a small flap in the center of the cornea using a knife called a microkeratome and folds this back to create an opening. The laser is then directed inside the eye, vaporizing the tissue and reshaping the cornea for accurate focusing. The lasering actually lasts about just 30-60 seconds only. The flap is then replaced. The healing process is a lot faster in LASIK. This prceudore reduces a person%u2019s dependency on glasses and contact lenses and thereby improves the quality of life.Asian countries like india, singapore , thailand etc are the best places for lasik surgery.regards,Annie Was this answer helpful?

To be blunt they won't work well. The technology is not there for this sort of system. You may see a few adopters but think back to Apples newton.... good idea way too soon for the hardware.

How is it not there? If you mean a completely independent set of glasses that perform like this on their own then yes. But realistically I think we're going to see Google Goggles (the product) as a bluetooth peripheral first, relying on an android phone for the processing power and 3G/4G connectivity.

The app is there in various forms (google goggles app and games). Glasses with lcds and cameras have existed for many years. Add bluetooth and it's done. Take a 5 year old pair of "spy" glasses with lcds and a camera, redo them with today's technology and it would allow space for a bluetooth chip.

What's next? Interactive games. Kids will be able to raise digital pets, which other users will be able to see when they wear the glasses and are in proximity to the pet's owner. After that, digital fights- throwing fireballs at each other. Other options? Digital "auras", or digital text above the head of another user. We'll have a digital world overlaid over the real one. Getting outside and walking around & playing with friends will have a whole new meaning. Other benefit- put fake versions of the glasses on schizophrenics and everyone will just assume that they are playing a game online!

With all the kneejerk sour grapes complains about apple products by antifanboys, you have to wonder which is the more brainwashed demographic; People who buy and use what they want and don't worry about it, or the avarice poisoned complainers.

Here's a thought – SOME people prefer Apple products because they think they're better! Android is a complete mess from a user interface standpoint, and many people don't like that.

Hi, Troll here, The Terminator only wore glasses to blend in. It was his eye's that gave him his bad a$$ vision.

I think this could be the first step toward something amazing... First it was 3D glasses, then augmented reality phones, now this, soon to be images projected on our retinas(check out Microsoft), and eventually... contact lenses.

Hi,LASIK or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is a 30-minute healthcare pcreodure used to treat vision problems due to nearsightedness. LASIK is a very popular vision correction pcreodure and involves making a surgical incision in the cornea. This pcreodure reduces a person%u2019s dependency on glasses and contact lenses and thereby improves the quality of life.Asian countries like india, singapore , thailand etc are the best places for lasik surgery.regards,Annie Was this answer helpful?

And since GOOGLE, not APPLE, released the first augmented reality app (google googles) it's an even bigger point of showing how in love CNN is with Apple.

They show an Iphone in an article about Google, developing an augmented reality device that might use things they learned releasing the FIRST augmented reality app.

CNN shows us a recently developed IOS game for a picture. Lol. Gotta love iCNN!

Or let me see...Mac mouse and UI stolen from Xerox. IPhone stolen from any other smartphone manufacturer, IPAD stolen from windows tablet PC's. MacTV stolen from any other set-top box manufacturers. The Pippin well, just sucked...though they may have gotten the idea from Amiga. Apple doesn't innovate. They take other peoples ideas and make them effortlessly usable and aesthetically pleasing (for those who use electronics as fashion accessories).

Get ready for an epidemic of headaches. I did research i this area when I was faculty at the University of Kentucky. It sounds cool, but it is absolutely killer on your eyes. Even with training (what the military does), limited exposure is all that is possible. the second issue is that unless the background you are looking at is plain, like a white wall, it amplifies the problem. The third issue is that your eyes can only focus on either the display or your environment – i.e. you can't pay attention (visually almost not at all and cognitively not very much either) to your surroundings and the display at the same time – driving, walking, etc. Even with Googles money, these problems are not really "solvable". Now, a direct interface with the eye or optic nerve would grab my attention ...

In "look-at" displays you are right. These head sets don't display the external world. Like holding an iphone about 1" from your eyes. . These have been on the market, but will fail.

The "REAL" virtual displays will be "see-through" – allowing real world observation wth virtual projection – either overlays, CNN, a PDF.. These will "float" in front of you – but focused at or near infinity so that your eye's accomdation allows you to see both the projection and real world without changing focus.. Like a HUD (Head up Display) on cars and jets.. Styling – no geek factor, comfort are key design areas..

Technology, the environment and the possibilities that will be available to us will eventually make us a planet of Cyborgs. The old way which is our way 'now' is to purchase something that we can put in our pockets and carry around. As time goes forward we'll see how people lose things that could be very expensive and it will become a major insurance head ache. As the planet gets warmer, and to avoid the high insurance premiums, we will begin to assimilate new technologies into our bodies so that they can't be lost. Our devices will become a part of us, and we will lose our humanity, because eventually the brain will be altared along with our conscience.

As I sit in front of a screen ALL DAMN DAY, my eyes became accustomed to focusing on close things and after 10 years, I once again became 'near sighted'. I hope everyone who is considering lasik reads this and is made aware that IT IS NOT PERMANENT. And oh by the way, once you have had lasik they cant do it again – there are 'other procedures' they can do but it distorts your vision so severly they will only do one at a time – then eventually if you stare at close things constantly you will be right back in the same boat – BEWARE OF LASIK

Well first off let me say that i am a doctor... of sorts. The easwnr to your question is quite simple really. Because of his damaged 11th chromosome he could not have the surgery procedure and was left with no eyesight in his left eye.If you have any questions email me at good luck on your adventures and god speed. Was this easwnr helpful?

Yes! The Terminator arrived from time travel naked. The sunglasses were stolen along with clothes. The graphics shown weren't on the sunglass lenses, and they wouldn't even be on the Terminator's actual eye cameras.

As a machine, all the displayed info would be in memory for use by the processor. It would be ridiculous to format the ready-to-use data into an image, display it on the inside of the eye cameras, then view the image, recognize info apart from image, convert info from video back to data.
      :) But, it's just a movie.

maybe its just there to show what people do today with their smartphones ( iPhone one of them) they will be able to do with these new glasses from Google. The photo shows iphone with augment reality app

Mars is right, look at the photo again. The "real world" shows cups with snowmen and such on them. The phone shows the same cups in the background with "augmented reality" snow falling around them.

The shades in terminator didn't really do anything but cover up the removed eye. I guess we'll need to get cornea replacements in the near future to make it TRULY 'terminatoresque'

I believe that they're refuring to the HUD seen in the Terminator movies, where the robot ID's its targets. That's what Augmented Reality is all about.

As for the cornea joke: it's not a joke. The same company that is trying to make the contact lens version already makes replacement lenses for cataract surgery, and said that they could use those too.

Hi,LASIK or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is a 30-minute healthcare oercrdupe used to treat vision problems due to nearsightedness. LASIK is a very popular vision correction oercrdupe and involves making a surgical incision in the cornea. This oercrdupe reduces a person%u2019s dependency on glasses and contact lenses and thereby improves the quality of life.Asian countries like india, singapore , thailand etc are the best places for lasik surgery.regards,Annie Was this answer helpful?

He had to pay Harlan Ellison for stealing The Terminator, and Poul Anderson's estate is still working on him about AVATAR. If he'd PAY when he swiped, nobody would care.

Wonder how many idiots will surf the web while driving while wearing these. Other than that, this sounds epic.. And most sunglasses already can cost $250 to $600 so it's two things, for the price of one.

Not to worry. People can use it while riding in their autonomous cars. We will be a race of mindless zombies not interacting with anyone, being driven around by computers as we stare off into a virtual world. Won't life be grand. I just hope the glasses will tell us when we are dead so we can tell our cars to drive us to the cemetery and drop us off into the hole nobody will be interested in digging.

I just want glasses that serve as full-on computer screens / TVs, that can track the movements of my retina, and which I can control via special "gloves"... so a finger movement for instance would control the glasses... but not full-on gloves... and I can have it go into just regular glasses mode, augmented reality mode, or full-on screen mode (where you can't see any of the real world, for instance relaxing in a chair at home).

Were there special glasses in the movie Terminator?

    What is this article about?

I don't get it either. The Terminator didn't have any special glasses. It's ability to "see" digitally superimposed info was part of it's eye design. The glasses didn't have anything to do with it. Article makes no sense. Google should rename their glasses.

Cool idea, but they hopefully will have them tested and reviewed by some eye doctors before they release them as it is quite possible they could cause eye strain or other eye problems and possibly muscle strain to the neck. Which is probaby why Google apparenty is not recommending they be worn full time. It would also be cool if someone would invent a watch or wristband that could beam a hologram displaying data in the same fashion, and it wouldn't cause eye strain. Mayble Apple might want to create a wearable i-pad. I've read about some very thin, bendable display screens, maybe those could be used within a wristband.
