What's the next Facebook (or is there one)?

By John D. Sutter, CNN

(CNN) - Facebook is trying to be the "forever network."

When the company's hoodie-wearing CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced a new feature called Timeline in September, he proclaimed that Facebook would be the website - or social network or app or whatever - to catalogue life from birth to death. The site even created a place for users to upload their baby photos, to signify the start of their Facebook lives.

This, of course, has happened in Internet history before. There was a time when tech pundits thought MySpace, Friendster and AltaVista would be around (and relevant) forever, too. But what's strange about Facebook's audacious birth-to-death claim is that, to many people, it didn't seem all that strange.

Maybe Facebook can last forever. Maybe, 901 million users later, it truly is something different.

As Facebook goes public, one question the non-Wall Street crowd should ask is this: Can anything ever replace Facebook? And, if so, what might that look like? If not, what could even compete with Facebook at this point?

Some writers, including Alexis Madrigal at The Atlantic, have argued it's high time for the post-Facebook era to emerge. Plenty people seem to agree with that. A recent poll from the Associated Press and CNBC found half of Americans think Facebook is a "passing fad," according to Time's tech blog.

That may all be wishful thinking, though. More likely, we're coming to a time when apps and micro-social-networks don't dislodge Facebook but at least compete with it in some respects - or even augment its capabilities. The scrappy photo-sharing app Instagram did that. So did Glancee, a "social discovery" mobile app. But, obviously, Facebook bought both of those.

CNNMoney: 7 startups Facebook should buy

Here's a list of 9 sites and apps that kinda-maybe-sorta could challenge Facebook's dominance. Or, at the very least, offer a partial alternative. Check them out and feel free to fight with us about the list in the comments. (Note: User numbers vary by site and app; it's an apples-oranges thing).

Highlight (number of users unpublished): This "social discovery" app was the buzz at this year's South by Southwest Interactive, a conference in Austin, Texas, that makes or breaks many tech start-ups. Essentially, the app aims to give people real-time information about the people all around them. “San Francisco is a city of 800,000 strangers," Highlight founder Paul Davison told Time. "You sit on the bus next to each other. You stand in line next to each other. You go to bars and meetups to meet each other. You walk by each other on the street. And you don’t know anything about anyone you see.” Highlight gives users a "sixth sense" about what these people all around you like and dislike, and whether you might be friends.

Path (3 million users) Founded by ex-Facebooker Dave Morin, Path has a couple things going for it that Facebook doesn't: It's mobile-first, which is important in a world where people tend to network on their phones more and more than on their desktop computers; and it's intimate. Path caps users' friend lists at 50 people, ensuring that you're actually communicating as the real you with people who you really know in real life. "Path is really focused on close friends and family, and developing deeper and more intimate relationships between the 50 closest people in your life," Morin told CNN last year. An app redesign won Path a new wave of support from the early-adopting tech public, but a privacy snafu in February, during which it was revealed that Path stored users' phone contact lists, may have eroded the trust of some people. Morin apologized for that data slip, saying it was accidental and had been remedied.

Pinterest (11.5 million monthly active users connected through Facebook, according to AppData) A recent report from the marketing firm Experian declared Pinterest "the hottest social media start-up since Facebook and YouTube." The site lets users "pin" photos of their favorite Internet findings onto personal boards, which can be shared with friends or kept private. Pinterest actually launched in March 2010, without much notice from the tech taste makers in Silicon Valley. It surged in popularity in late 2011 and early this year and, according to Experian's report, is the third most-visited social networking site in the United States, excluding mobile usage. The site is especially popular with people who are design- and art-minded, or who are trying to plan events or decorate a new house. Also: President Obama uses it. But there have been questions of late about whether the site's popularity is waning.

Viddy (36 million monthly active users connected to Facebook, according to AppData) Billed by Paris Hilton as "like Instagram, but it's video," Viddy lets users record and upload 15-second video clips, then stylize them with retro-hipster-looking filters. Viddy isn't the first to try the short-video-app thing. An app called 12-seconds pioneered this space a couple of years ago and then shut down. But the startup seems poised to capitalize on Instagram's success as an app that can make anyone's photos interesting and fun to look at. Maybe Viddy can do the same for short video messages.

Tumblr (56 million blogs) Tumblr is more of a blog network than a social network, but it is an increasingly popular platform for creative types to share videos and short stories about their lives. Founder David Karp describes it this way: "Tumblr is the best place in the world for some of the most creative people in the world, so we're trying to build basically the best tools for self-expression."

Google+ (90 million accounts) In terms of format, Google's social network is the closest thing to Facebook. But it's not nearly as successful. The network, launched last summer and immediately seen as a latecomer follow-up to Facebook, is the constant butt of jokes in the tech world. Want to put a photo where no one will see it? Post it to Google+. The funny thing is that the network continues to maintain some steam and relevance long after the haters thought it would die. In part, that's because of the big-fisted control Google maintains over Internet searches. Since items that are posted on Google+ are given some degree of priority (there's a big fight about how much) over other content, some people use Google+ just so that their digital lives are more searchable to the public.

Twitter (140 million active users) I mean, you know what Twitter is by now, right? It's been six years. The micro-blogging site has turned into more of a news feed than a social network these days, although it's still used as a one-line public chat program by lots of people. As Rebecca Rosen notes at The Atlantic, there are websites (and lots of tablet apps) that seek to aggregate and display links shared over Twitter. It's "Twitter without the Twitter feed," as she says, and that may well be the future of this network, which pioneered real-time communication online.

LinkedIn (161 million accounts) LinkedIn is often overlooked in the debate about online "social networking" sites. Mostly because it's no fun to socialize when you're wearing a tie and shoving your resume in the face of everyone you meet. But the 10-year-old site (that's two years older than Facebook) has proved itself as the premier location for a special kind of networking - the business-y kind. And there are some signs it's loosening up. The slickly designed iPad and iPhone apps for LinkedIn get rave reviews from the tech set. And, anecdotally, more people seem to be posting about their personal lives on a network that was designed first and foremost for professional connections.

Bonus edition: Airtime (0 users) An app with no users? Why's it on the list? Remember that dude who Justin Timberlake played in "The Social Network?" That guy's name is Sean Parker and he's launching this much-anticipated app on June 5. The Napster creator is regarded as one Silicon Valley's main taste makers - or at least one of the richest. So it's possible this social-video startup could rise to the point that it challenges Facebook, which is a company Parker also invested in. Who knows? But it's worth watching.

Prior to the widespread use of microprocessors, a computer that could fit on a desk was considered remarkably small. Early personal computers, like the IBM PC, were "desktop" machines, with a horizontally oriented computer case, usually intended to have the display screen placed on top to save space on the desktop. In modern usage the word "desktop" usually refers to tower cases that are in fact more often located on the floor under the desk than on a desk.:^

Interesting article. It's very unfortunate that more than the last one decade, the travel industry has currently been able to to tackle terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, influenza, swine flu, as well as the first ever real global economic depression. Via all of it the industry has proven to be effective, resilient in addition to dynamic, acquiring new ways to deal with misfortune. There are always fresh difficulties and opportunity to which the sector must once again adapt and respond. backlink

Tumblr is the absolute best, but if everyone started using Tumblr it would completely ruin the experience. An essential part of Tumblr is that it is anonymous for the most part. I mean sure, people can connect you through your photo or your URL can get around, but for the most part there is an unspoken rule on Tumblr that you do not advertise your blog on Facebook and you do not connect it to your real life. It's wonderful.

So, how could you possibly not mention the REAL google`s alternative to facebook. Its called Orkut and it had its golden times. And man, those were blinking golden times. The only reason it faded away? Brazilians started realizing they were alone in the party, and somewhy they thougth they could have more fun in the party next door. For anyone who used it, its clear it was way more fun and interesting in there.

I don't where you hang out on the internet but I don't see Google+ being the butt of any jokes unless it's from Facebook users. Facebook and Google+ do not perform the same function.

Facebook is for connecting with old friends and being in the loop on when they brush their cat's teeth and how many new pigs they have in farmville. Oh and don't forget the thousands and thousands of duck lipped girls taking hundreds and hundreds of self portraits. Who could leave that?

Google+ is for making new friends and finding content. You aren't overwhelmed with constant automatic posts from games, applications and polls. You don't have to be "allowed" in order to see someone's public posts. If it's public, it's public.. you can follow whoever you want (they can still block you though if you do something stupid).

I was on facebook for 3 years and I haven't missed it for a single minute during the last year since I closed my account. If not Google+ then try something else.... ANYTHING else that brings something fresh and interesting into your life instead of the same old tired drama.

I get about 50x more useful info on Twitter, which is evolving to be more like an instant newsfeed from people I don't know than a recap of cat pictures from those I do know. By the way, why was Myspace not included in this list? Like the black knight with no legs or arms, "it's not dead yet!"

Why rate sites based on number of users? Do you really chat sith 9 million "friends" at the same time??? Any social network can be the right one if there are a dozen people that you enjoy there.

Twitter already has over 500 million users and Pinterest is the hottest image sharing website at the moment. If FB doesn't evolve they might find them selves at second place.

facebook is closely tied to academia. When the college bubble pops the facebook bubble will soon follow. Undergrads think it is cool, and it is if you are young, single, liberal, and optimistic about people and the future. I say after 25 it becomes clear that facebook is not only worthless but pathological to personal advancement.

What is interesting is the difference between sites/aps that create a need that you want to fill with their product and those who fill an existing need in a new way. Nobody wanted to Pinterest before there was one, but people were networking before LinkedIn. I've seen EventSmart and used it twice, I would say it's filling that void of things we already do. Buy gifts for people, only it lets you do it as a group. Very cool. I've thought for a while FB is in trouble because they can't seem to build a mobile ap worth crap, the new update is no exception.

Not the next Facebook but the first http://talkic.com – a social network where contributing to topics benefits causes (a topical way to make new connections...a free way to click for causes).

I like Facebook, but I like EventSmart even more.

Facebook provides some (but not all) of what we need, and it provides a ton of things we don't need. As much as I like all of my contacts, most of the "newsfeed" I could live without.

I signed up for EventSmart (it's free) on http://www.myeventsmart.com, and am an active user of it. Things have been better for me since then, because it doesn't block anything, instead it collects the important things I really care about that are happening to people in my network and notifies me of them....things that get buried, missed or overlooked in the distraction of all the newsfeed noise. EventSmart combines the collecting of important it with an optional gifting service so you can reach out to friends/family in celebrating those events.

A friend of mine - his son was seriously injured in an automobile accident - EventSmart notified me (because it is that smart) and asked if I wanted to contribute to a joint gift with others. I did so - I didn't have to interrupt my incredibly busy life to drive somewhere and buy a card of figure out how to go to a bank to make a donation - I took care of it all while sitting at my computer, and in the process I sent a message of support to my friend and asked him if he needed anything. If he had, then I would have gone in person. But, as is often the case, he didn't need me to get up and drive anywhere, he just needed my support and the donations. He was better off, I was better off, and my friendship was rendered more efficient that way.

My point is not that we should stop visiting our friends in person. We hang out in person when it is time to hang out. My point is, important things get missed when people don't have time to support it in person, and EventSmart puts you in a position to "be there" at important times when you can't be there in person. You avoid missing important things. And it's free.

I like Facebook for that reason - it put me in a position to be a part of EventSmart.

You should try sounding less like a paid advertisement when you talk. Hanging around you must be like being trapped in an infomercial.

Facebook will last as long as they dont integrate instant messaging, this technology can use multi-networks like email and mobile phone ,so you can Instant message someone who is not using the same program. industry insiders think this could happen in 3-5 years. Zuckerman is a salesman and investors should look at where the technology is heading.

If Mr Mark was as smart as he looked, he'd sell out to Mr. Google at a very discounted price (however many millions that is), to walk away with a smile starting up new venture competing against FB. With his experience the possibilities are endless. But no, he's not as smart as he looks. :(

EventSmart (www.myeventsmart.com) is a great tool for managing social networks. It filters out all of the important things you really care about....things that get buried, missed or overlooked. Then they combine it with a gifting service so you can reach out to friends/family in celebrating those events. The bottom line is that you become more connected with your relationships and that's ultimately what we want, right?

Plus, it's a FREE service. I created the company when I got frustrated at being so overloaded with meaningless posts. Yeah, I want to know about my network, but only on things that really matter.

Eventsmart is the best app that I have used in regards to social gifting! I only have to pitch in $5 and then I can invite other friends to chip into the gift as well. The gift can be anything from a birthday to an anniversary. Also, the filter picks up important key words that let me know when something has happened such as a birth or marriage. It is a great service! Thank God someone got the idea!

While I like FB it does tend to get overcrowded with a bunch of useless, to me, mumbo jumbo. I love the outdoors and have been spending a lot of time on http://www.bigdeed.com which concentrates on climbing, cycling, hiking and snow sports. That being said I think FB will be around for a long time.

Perhaps the next thing to replace Facebook needs to be a Wiki type of social network that doesn't make you feel they are trying to market you or to you. Plus something that is not designed just to make some Mark Zukerberg and friends rich. Does anybody really believe there are even half the actual users on Facebook as are talked about? My 11 year old daughter has 4 or 5 Facebook pages registered under different names and I suspect that most users do – especially if you include failed or aborted attempts to set up a profile.

Facebook has gone from a fad to nearly a utility. It won't die without something better replacing it. Facebook is great for keeping in touch, but it is not a very pleasant experience. I think there is significant room for improvement, especially in the areas of privacy and independence. Facebook is trying to put us all in one box for advertisers and governments to open as they wish. I hope someone does start up something better. I think many, if not most, will jump to a new site and leave facebook just like they did myspace.

How is something that keeps growing and getting bigger gonna die?
Anyway, you will die and many others with your idea while religion will live on.

go, you need to use your brain. Religion is dying and it is about time. Use reason and stop believing in fairy tales. You make yourself sound foolish.

Just look at the image, go. Is that how you want to live? Your children to live? Oppression of the people is what religion is really about. Atheism, agnosticism and other forms of non- belief are growing faster than you realize. Someday we will be in the majority and only then will you and I truly be free to choose or not to choose.

The new Zune browser is sugsiiprnrly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

What if there wasn't a next big website. What if, instead we split up into smaller websites like twitter and path and linkedin and just leave each other alone. These sites are great because it doesn't force the "get as many of your friends to join so we can market to their kids" down everyone's throat. I don't know how Twitter makes money but it sure as hell isn't as annoying as facebook. Facebook is for kids to complain to their friends about how hard their lives are with "last years iphone".

Hey there – that's a really interesting point. Thanks for sharing it. I think there is lots of evidence that niche social networks are among the most successful post-Facebook sites/apps. But many of them are linked together via Facebook, so there's that. Haven't seen a Big Network challenger that can really take Facebook on, although G+ certainly would like to be that.

The argument that facebook is for kids died 5 years ago. There is nothing inherently wrong with facebook. Like anything man-made, it is a tool and it is up to the users to decide how it's used. Sure, there will be teenagers complaining about their old phones and their "important" problems... Who cares? Are you actually friends with any of them? If you are, then you are free to remove or block them. Facebook allowed my 75 year old grandfather to reconnect with some of his old war buddies. I would've never believed something like that could happen just a few years ago.

I HIGHLY reccomend Path. It's a beautiful app with a beautiful interface and is very user-friendly. It has Google+ syndrome right now so it's fairly empty, but unlike Google+ it doesn't have Google to back it up and keep it going. But it is for sure worth your time. You will love it.
