We're all doodlers by nature. Give most people a pen, paper and some down time, and they'll fill the margins with the fruits of their imagination.
But imagine if you could wave a pen in the air and create a three-dimensional rendering: A toy, a sculpture, a crude architectural model.
Soon you will. A Boston-based startup, WobbleWorks, has created what they are calling the world's first 3-D printing pen. It's called the 3Doodler, and it's been a sensation on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding site, since it debuted there Tuesday morning. The makers of the 3Doodler set a modest fundraising goal of $30,000; within 48 hours, backers had pledged more than $1.1 million.
"We knew it was a great product. But we didn't expect the response to be this fast," said Daniel Cowen, a spokesman for the gadget, which is still a prototype. "The velocity of the response caught us by surprise. It's phenomenal."
The 3Doodler plugs into an electrical outlet and works sort of like a glue gun. As the pen draws, it oozes heated plastic, which quickly cools and solidifies, allowing its user to build an infinite variety of patterns and shapes. Its makers say it works on surfaces or in the air.
Users load spaghetti-like strands of non-toxic ABS plastic - the same stuff that's in 3-D printers - into the back of the pen. (A biogradeable form of plastic made from corn is also available.) The 3Doodler's makers say each one-foot strand of plastic, available in a wide range of colors, can produce about 11 feet of moldable material.
WobbleWorks sees the 3Doodler as a simple and affordable form of 3-D printing, an emerging form of manufacturing that uses computer models to help machines build plastic objects. The MakerBot Replicator 2, perhaps the best-known 3-D printer for the home, costs $2,200. Cowen said they expect to sell the 3Doodler for $75, which includes a small bag of plastic strands.
Additional 1kg spools of plastic will be available from a variety of sources for $30 to $55, WobbleWorks says. The pen's makers say the average 1kg spool of 3mm ABS plastic will supply roughly 4,000 feet of 3Doodling, or about the height of three Empire State Buildings.
The gadget is shaping up to be a hit for WobbleWorks, a small toy and robotics company led by computer engineers Peter Dilworth and Maxwell Bogue.
If manufacturing goes according to schedule, the first buyers will receive their 3Doodlers in September, Cowen said. Buyers who order now won't receive the pen until November, he said.
The makers of 3Doodler have been collaborating with wire artists on Etsy, the crafts website, to show how the pen can be used to create artwork, jewelry and other objects.
"We really want to create a community around 3Doodler," Cowen said. With more than 13,000 financial backers already on Kickstarter, they may already have.

Yes, Sheldon Cooper of the sitcom Big Bang Theory. Lots of us know about this character played by Jim Parsons. You could say that Sheldon is a classic example of a weird friend. Initially, I thought Sheldon was an alien from outer space. The way he behaves, his figurative mode of speech was unusual and seriously discrete. If you take a character analysis of Sheldon ways of living, mannerism, it could sometimes flabbergast you. Why? Because you have a person like his friends Leonard, Howard, and Rajesh have an extensive collection of superhero toys in which Flash is his favorite. Man! You will split into laughter, when you see in an episode where he dresses up as the Flash after drinking five cups of coffee. He gets so energized and intoxicated that he just speeds out of the apartment into the street in the Flash costume. ,

OH!! The Power of Stupidity. a hole lot about nothing
it is awsome
Can't forget about the laws of gravity.
Doesn't say anything about being bio-degradable. So, more plastic for the landfills!
actually facool, the 6th paragraph mentions a biodegradable spool available
Well, there goes the adult toy industry...
how much would one cost
Obama is giving these out for free to everyone on welfare and don't work! At the tax payers expense. Just like his ObamaPhone program!
Did you read the article, or just the headline? It says right there: "Cowen said they expect to sell the 3Doodler for $75, which includes a small bag of plastic strands."
Don't you people even consider reading an article before making comment or asking questions? Price and biodegradability are right there in front of you. As for 3d printing, its old. Google MIT 3d printing, Alan Alda, 3d printed bicycle. I believe it was the Learning Channel that had a special on this around 8 years ago (I can't recall when I saw it). Alda interviewed profs there who demonstrated the process plus showed a bicycle printed from a file. The next big leap for this toy is 3d printing allied with nano-engineering coupled with "mining" trash dumps. Nanobots, coupled with 3d printers, and fed from a trash dump will revolutionize engineering fields. That's where I'd be if young, and where I tried to get my son to specialize in. Canada is far ahead of us in nano-engineering. They established a research center similar to our DARPA more than six years ago. There are many interesting things going on in the world....beyond the worst dressed at the Oscars and current TV shows. But you really do need to read carefully. Study...not scan. Tchuss!
criously
75$
You must know how to draw first.
Okay, I am a doodler, I want one.
Disgusting!
Why the open mind?
you are mental
Is this going to be like the brighteyes project? Whatever happened to that?
Really enjoy the blogging you've shown the internet. I have added your website to my RSS. Looking forward to your next article. Web Watcher if u wanna check out my website.

LOL
How do you erase it?
Obama sux...he/s destroying America
That's a good one. how does one erase plastic?
it says PEN not pencil. pens dnt erase unless its erasablend it dsnt say tht rite?
o.O
Good, everything that is born , dies and no living thing , know when its their time to die.
Maybe having one of these pens will take you back to reality. You might even be able to diagram how Bush and the GOP destroyed the economy. That's a 3D diagram if there ever was one.
$1.89. That was the price of regular unleaded gas when Obama took office. Everything has skyrocketed in price, but at least the people on welfare with 12 kids and wont work are living great these days!
1.89 was a momentary dip because of the housing crash. You don't establish a trend by measuring from anomalous dips to spikes you measure the mean of the curve. You people make the same inane mistake in your climate change denial. It's deliberately deceptive and you should be mad people made you fall for it.
Just think all those doodles ending up in the landfill...oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
ummm....it's a glue gun...with plastic instead of glue. This is more marketing than substance.
draw something with a glue gun go for it lol
This product shows great potential for add-ons!
First drawing I will do is one of Kelly LeBrock.
Maybe with these and the 3-D printers, we can stop importing all of our goods from China...
Shoot, I've been doing things like this with a hot glue gun for decades
No worries, my homie Obama is giving these pens and flatscreen TVs out to everyone on welfare for FREE who doesnt work! And your 12 kids on welfare will all get them too! All at the taxpayers expense. Obama is the SHIZZLE my NIZZLE!
Obama good! He let me and me 5 kids stay in country free with no deport! Me no pay no taxes! Me like Obama!
Grow up you t00ls, stop trolling an interesting article to satisfy your own p@thetic obsessions
Man, you're so cool & funny, and original! How do you do it? Oh wait, I know already.
Obama hates white people.
No YOU'RE original. The way you put Jesus as your name (I'm sure it's really your name). The shock factor
is off the hook bro! Off the chain! How did YOU react so quickly with something so original!
Tardo.
Ah ha!
Did you that the states with the most welfare recipients are RED STATES?
Wow, you seem very edumacated! Obama would be proud.
He brain farted while typing and left out a word...at least he didn't get the facts plain wrong.
I think I have Reddit this somewhere?
This year's Christmas present for my artist daughter! It would definitely be easier than clay for some of her work.
Yes, that's all we need. More plastic in our homes, filling up landfills......I doubt everyone will buy the more expensive biodegradable version. It looks fun to play with but so much waste and chemicals.
Who pooped in your cornflakes this morning?
This is awesome and you know it, just climb off your high horse for like 20 seconds and enjoy.
This is fantastic. I'm buying 3 for Christmas. One for each of my grandkids – even the 2 that will be 10 months and 1 year then.
I'll assume you skimmed over the part about a biodegradable option made of corn?
I will assume you skimmed the portion of the commenter's comment referring to the biodegradable corn option.
Cool down...... Someone has already done a kickstarter project for a plastic recycling machine that chops up old shampoo & water bottle and turns them into the filament required by this pen and 3D printers. Wow......
Food for thought AseMom... the plastic used to make the interior of your car uses more oil and chemicals than non-toxic ABS plastic. So do us all a favor and sale your car. Before your teenage kids total it and fill up our landfills.
AHHHHHH!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!! Chickenasourus is attacking the Eifful Tower!!
Haha nice one!
I want one!!
You have to start somewhere. Pretty cool first attempt at creating a new toy.
I'd rather spend $2200 on a 3-D printer than invest in this, or a set of good files and chisels and some carving wood, or a lump of clay and some shaping tools.
It is neat, but seems to have limited applications. The article implies you would "draw objects in the air" or "wave a pen in the air", but in reality you need to construct them from a base up.
Yeah, unfortunately the laws of gravity still apply.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Neat, but reallly limited applications. Especially since the advantage of 3D printing is the ability to have accurately defined deminsions which are completely impossible with a pen.
I'll take it for what it is: a cool toy. I do not see any need for this in any of the design applications I'm involved in nor do I see it even coming close to replace 3D printers that print with a better resolution than the human eye can even detect. I don't care how cheap it is. I need precision regardless of the cost.
This looks like a great tool for getting a loose idea or concept down "on paper" then you can move on to a more precise medium once the idea or concept is developed further. Imagine getting a sketch from the principle architect in your firm and they could actually make it 3D? You'd gain so much more traction by foregoing the 3D interpretation of a "3D" drawing on a 2D surface. Give this pen to some of the greats like Renzo Piano, Shigeru Ban, or Zaha Hadid.
Then don't buy it. Tchuss!
Everything has limited applications. That's why we have different tools for different jobs. Of course you start from a base. It's 3D; not anti-gravity.
How is this really different from a precise glue gun?
Speed and strength, mainly.
We've got an exclusive interview with the guys over at 3Doodler right here > http://www.prsnlz.me/articles/exclusive-interview-with-3doodlers-co-founder-max-bogue/
Why?
Hey babe u like new email ???????
Think outside the box.
Humans and builders are at odds.
Imagine converging 3-D data for result.
IE. Computer imaging of heatlh related issues in growth stages for human analysis, as well as the ability to be re-analyzed by computation to be fed back into the system after analytic staging results based on variable probability given true 3 dimensional growth pattern.
IE. Convergence of computational forward and reverse engineering given 3 true dimensions for pattern analysis...
Etc etc etc etc
Give the pen to a robotic arm for precision and freedom of movement...
EG. Introduce new elements and imagine a circuit board that's anything but "flat" with optical traces... The sky is the limit – sometimes
Another thought – computational ratio conversions – large or small
Okay I'm going to ask can you F%$# it?
Dude, I love the guys who made this now. Knowing this will exist just made my day.
I throw money at the screen but it's not giving me anything! T.T
Hopefully, the advent of 3D printing means the end of Walmart's stranglehold on the American economy, and the end of China's cheap knock-off fuled economic dominance.
Once again, American innovation wins.
Wyn Kelly Swainson . He was granted British patent 1 240 043 in 1971 for a stereolithography type of process.
I can see at least 100 tangible applications for this. Where can I invest?
So you can invest via Kickstarter. As for thinking of over 100 reasons, I want to see if you really can think of 100 reasons. Ready, Go!
Body art.
Bar coding your personal space
turn lanes for birds
Ruining a co-workers cubicle
reminding them to put the toilet seat down.
kick me signs
semi auto assault plastic weapons, 15 units in robot hands making a huge scale 3d printer.. ultra precise microscopic versions too, in computer hands, and simultaneously human operators also helping create stuff.. finally a human powered bicycle helicopter printed from this thing someday..
The third paragraph of the article has a link (3Doodler) to the video. Watch that. They really do just make a quick base squiggle on a surface and draw up into the air. The plastic dries immediately after extrusion into a springy solid thread about the thickness of plastic-coated electrical wires. It really is pretty cool. The video features a lot of fun things made with the tool. The company is Wobble Works and the guys are engineering freaks who met in Hong Kong. They've been working on the 3D Doodler for a few years and the patent is pending. Guess where they're going to manufacture it? Yep, CHINA! The last line of the video, and I quote:
" We've already been to China and we're working with a factory. Now, all we need is your support". When they choose to produce this product in the US, they'll have my support.
Looks like it could be good to eat. Godzilla wastes the Eiffel Tower. A new Mr. Bill and Sluggo Show with newer and more violent death scenes like putting plastic around his head. I've gone on dreadfully long. Please forgive
Oh I can see how this could become a new type of Gumby show but more Walking dead features.. so cool
Just jhow soon will this blow over?
And watch, within 1 year some jarhead will be suing them because some innocent and dopey kid eats this stuff and then a lawsuit will follow and then 3d pens will be taken off the shelves...
I'm not glorifying this but I can just see this happening right in front of my eyes... ahhh....
Why a jarhead? Do Marines sue alot?
LOL i meant some idiot...
Um a isn't this just a glorified glue gun? 3D implies computer aided. Im guessing if your not very artistic you just wasted $2K for a plastic dribbler.
The printer is $2k. The glorified glue gun is $75.
Actually, 3D implies that it's three-dimensional. We've had three dimensions far longer than computers.
They used to call it a sculpture.
3D = Three Dimensional. You = Two Dimensional.
Where will they be made?
http://www.the3doodler.com/
My life is now complete because of this pen! I now have something for which to live! Ok... Seriously... I want one... No.. Really... I do...
Reblogged this on Pragmatic Optimism and commented:
On CNN.com-a 3-D pen that let's you draw objects in the air.
Nobody cares.
I want one.
This is cool!!!!!
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
We see what you did there.
Just wait till the crazy lawn ornimants start showing up and the sculptures in your friends homes. Wait till people start building entire forts with this stuff... Then homes can, in theory, can be constructed. The imaginations of some people, especially when they design things out of thin air... This technology could get really interesting really fast.
There's ALREADY a 3-D printer that can build an entire HOUSE in two weeks. And it's done on-site.
Manufactured by some company in Denmark...
Google that!
Yes this can do that too but the time frame will take a bit longer, around seven years to build a one bedroom house.
I did google the 3D house in Denmark. It's walls are made of wood. It also contains some steel and the windows are glass. It isn't made with 3D print technology. It's actually made with a technology called CNC which does computer milling. In the case of this house, the computer milling machine is fed a whole wooden wall and it cuts out the doors and windows, etc. So, it's a different technology but still pretty cool.
They also noted in the article that 3D printing is not yet being used to make any really large objects.
This could be the next pencil for architects, set designers, 3-D graphics programmers....and it could be like the can of silly string you buy at Spencer's and try to shoot in the eyes, noses, and mouths of friends.
This will speed development time. No need to spend the time and effort to design the item on a computer convert the file to a 3D printer and wait for the printer to print it. You can do it real time!
Now all we need is a 3D eraser you can use to fix your design as you go.
Let's see – I think we could call them silly putty in a pen. What's the big deal?
Sort of like the machine on Big Bang Theory on which Howard and Raj make models of themselves.
JJ,
There are some things you don't ever admit to if you want to date. Watching Big Bang Theory is one of them.
Oh, come on now, that's not true! ... Bazinga!
I have a girlfriend. We both love Big Bang Theory and usually watch it together.
Sheldon annoys the crap out of me.
"Headless" in the username also implies "brainless," thus we have gunner's comment.
My wife and I like watching the Big Bang Theory. It's a funny programme, and I'm not sure how it would make one un-datable. In fact, looking at the ratings, about 18MM people watched in the US last week. Perhaps they are all lonely?
lmao
this is amazingly cool! where can i pre-order!!!
My homie Obama is going to give all these out to people on welfare for free! But at the tax payers expense. Obama is the SHIZZLE!
and this is related to the post how or are you suffering from tourettes?
Meh. Not that funny plus not informed equals lame post from "ObamaPen."
Proof that clowns like you could make a story about pocket lint relate to your childish hatred toward our President.
really? well hey can you get me one?
When you get yours then, I'll buy it at a discounted price.
If you wake up every day thinking about Obama, it's probably not really about Obama.
your an ass, why dont you go pump jimmy swaggert and then beat your wife
Keep your focus on Obama's pen while he uses it to make rich folk ripping off us working Americans pay for your healthcare.
or just get a life....
Shizzle? Are you typing on here from 2006?
Move to wherever you think is better then ... please.
I think my favorite part of their Kickstarter video was... "Pete and I have already been to China" Ha. Just like everything else... it will be "MADE IN CHINA" I suppose if they made it in America they would have had to set the Kickstarter bid for an additional two million in labor right? Ha.
Rather, they'd face a ton of regulations to factory conditions, not safety per se but a light switch would be 1" too high or low based on this or that set of rules and they'd be closed down for weeks at a critical time and fined tens of thousands. Then a few weeks later, some inspector would come in and say that their FIXED light switches were 1" too left or right, even using another set of rules that contradicted the first, and they'd be through it again.
Overall it's the same or cheaper to make things in America. The problem is that the big guys get a steep discount out of taxes to make it cheaper to leave, while the little guys face 'regulators' trying to justify their jobs handing out fines like candy.
Can you get carpel-tunnel elbow?
nope, because the carpel tunnel is an ailment of the "carpels" which are in your wrist... you can get something called "tennis elbow" which could be what you mean
I have tennis in my elbows?
friggan anatomy takes the fun out of everything.
"nontoxic abs plastic". Absolute bullocks.
Name the toxic component of ABS plastic ... didn't think so. Do you realize that all plastic is NOT the same thing? ABS, HDPE, PS and many others are no more toxic than a piece of glass.
If you believe the Chinese when they say it's ABS plastic. They don't exactly have the best record of disclosing the truth of what their products are made of.
If it's plastic, how do you draw it in the air without it falling? The headline made it sound like you could create a floating 3D display.
Am I missing something here?
:\
Lego is also magic. I mean, how do people build tall things with it?
lego is pretty magic. the molding tolerance is CRIZAZY small
The process, the plastic cools quickly. You would just need to anchor on point.
Just silly putty in a pen is all it is.
Watch the video. It doesnt float but you start it on a surface and u just draw straight up in the air. The plastic freezes right away. Its crazy. Every artists dream. Start to see some really wierd sculptures in your friends homes and lawn ornamants. Lololol
They raised 1.1 million for a pen??? It is a can of silly string in the shape of a pen???!!!???
Watch the video in the article. It's pretty amazing.
Not buying into this. Prototyping? Really? How many things that need prototyping are made of crude squiggly lines? And talk about a sensationalized article...do you really think those sculptures were just drawn into three dimensional space? Did the dinosaur's legs and the tower's supports just magically stand upright while the rest of the sculpture was drawn? Clearly these were drawn on a flat surface then assembled.
A tool to use in prototyping. It will not create a beautiful finished prototype, but as a tool for adding material or rough details, yes it would be very useful. Every professional Model maker or prototyper can see its usefulness.
$1.1 million says you don't know what you're talking about.
Maybe you should do a little research on your own before spouting off like you know everything? There are videos of this thing in action. Check them out.
I remember the videos of Seg-ways too... didn't go so well.
one time industrial designer says this is gonna be useful, and every design student will probly buy one. I'd bank on it.
Especially those designers and students who have found that using a lump of clay and a fork is just too darned expensive.
You know you can watch their official video from a link in the article. And they do draw straight up from the surface. It's amazing how durable it is.
To be really useful for prototyping this thing needs an accelerometer and/or gyroscope and should capture the "drawing" as a 3d model so it can be refined and reproduced. I'll take a cash lump sum now in lieu of royalties, thank you.
And those pipe-cleaner looking things look so durable, not like they'd damage at the least touch! /sarcasm
All they need to do is get Martha Stewart to use it for Christmas decorations once and they won't be able to make enough of them
.
Plastic welders have also been around for decades. It's amazing to me this hasn't been done a long time ago. Adapting this for use as a "sculpting" tool is the real breakthrough here. I'm a professional prototype builder and can see this as a must have in every proto-builders tool box.
I'd use it to create a 3D female version on of myself – then I'd bang it! How's that for narcissism?!
How mature.
Your just mad you didn't think of it first.
No, he's got a point there. Just make sure the plastic cools first.
I'd get a real girl instead, but that's just me. Enjoy the feel of cold and dry plastic.
Plenty of girls out there with plenty of "plastic" my friend...
I think you need a hobby. A different one.
I would Doodle a life size replica of myself sitting at my desk so the boss thinks I am working...kinda like he thinks I am now.
As innovations go, it's not very impressive. Basically, it's a glue gun used for doodling. Not exactly ground-breaking.
It only has to be fun and original to be a winner.
In-depth news coverage of pen capable of drawing guns into existence in 3...2...1...
lLook up 3d printers. They are already purtnear close.
Very cool, as a jewelry designer – I want one !
Right! As a fashion designer, the first thing I thought was "yes! I can finally chuck my sketchbook!"
Same here! I've been looking for a good way to design things 3dimensionally without doing flat x/y, y/z, and y/x plot drawings. It gets really tedious and doesn't prepare you for dimension complications. I'm backing this poject. I want one!
Cool!
I see no real use for this other than a toy.
It's good for prototyping - will save time and money, especially if you combine it with a 3D printing.
architects and industrial designers would love to have something like this as a design tool
I see no real use for you other than janitorial services.
Love it.
YES
That’s what they said about the airplane
And the home computer.
For those of us who do any sort of three-dimensional design, this is essentially the most awesome thing ever. Now, instead of creating 2D versions on paper and then creating the real thing in 3D, it skips the annoying sort of sketch-n-hope on paper problem. For example, if I design a dress, I have to put it on paper first. I hate this step since I suck at drawing. With the pen, i can just build it on the desk in a way that's much more consistent with how I make the actual piece.
not all of us are imaginative. Someone's gotta scrub the urinals.
This is a great idea! If a co-worker falls asleep at the next desk, you could build a little cage around him, or make a big pad lock so your boss can't get out of his office. Need a footstool, or a new case for your iPod, dash one off. The possibilities are endless.
"Great" ideas – of course the material isnt strong enough for any of those things.
Alpine Queen U rule....giant cage..love it. But one could Doodle him/herself a shovel to tunnel out...what then?
Oh, I'd just love to see this thing brought out for frat-house parties. Can you imagine what would happen to the first person to pass out?
This may be the next computer! Good bye Apple and Microsoft....I will not upload mear files but I shall Doodle in the sky! No more downloading naughty images when I have 11ft of plastic to make a giant dominatrix with!
For all those that despise science & technology this is a great invention. It is what moves mankind forward on many levels. So, you can live in your cave while the rest of the world plays & constructs with our 3D designer.
If it was really cool, they would have shown a video. Since they did not, I can only guess its a piece of junk. It must write on air the same way silly spray does.
In the article they have a link that leads to the vid. The link is 3Doodler in the 3rd paragraph.
In the future, i could see this product being used in art classes in schools all around the world. These guys are going to make ALOT of money. They should go on SHARK TANK lol.
Years ago I used to play with using electric fence wire the same way. You can have a lot of fun with manual additive methods like this ^_^ esp when you add in things like tissue paper or other materials that can be used to create an outer skin once the skeleton is stable.
You can really see the first glimmers of the future in these gadgets... ST replicators, here we come.
Wow... the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.
especially when you use the pen to make a sword
@ Trevor...haha that was pretty clever
You can also use a sword to make a pen. HA!
